Ex-strongman’s son in Peru to form own bloc in congress

The son of former strongman Alberto Fujimori is creating his own bloc in Peru’s congress after being kicked out of the party led by his sister, a move that significantly weakens the opposition’s clout as it moves past its failed attempt to impeach the nation’s president.

Kenji Fujimori said Wednesday that he and nine other lawmakers from the Popular Will party will now support President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, the deeply unpopular leader who narrowly escaped impeachment just before Christmas when the dissident faction abstained from voting.

Standing alongside his colleagues, the 37-year-old Fujimori said, “We are fighting for freedom of conscience, the freedom of expression, (and) against systematic abuses that we have been the victims of, abuses against our founding leader, my father, the engineer Alberto Fujimori.”

The rift between Kenji Fujimori and his sister, Keiko Fujimori, means Popular Will is dropping to 61 seats in the 130-member congress, taking away the “absolute majority” that allowed its lawmakers to pass decrees even without the president’s approval and initiate investigations against officials.

Juan Sheput, a member of Kuczynski’s party, predicted Wednesday’s announcement will pave the way for Alberto Fujimori to have a voice in congress through his son.

“It will change the political geography of congress,” he said.

The upheaval is the result of continuing discord between the politician children of Alberto Fujimori.

Daughter Keiko Fujimori lost narrowly to Kuczynski in the 2016 presidential runoff election and under her leadership Popular Will has repeatedly stymied the president’s government. Kenji Fujimori, however, expressed interest in “building bridges” with Kuczynski.

Just days after dodging impeachment, Kuczynski pardoned Alberto Fujimori from a 25-year prison sentence for human rights abuses and corruption committed during his decade-long rule in the 1990s. Many Peruvians believe Kenji Fujimori’s abstention from the vote was part of a deal with Kuczynski to free his father. Both Kenji Fujimori and Kuczynski have denied having any such agreement.

The pardon has sparked periodic protests throughout Peru as angry relatives of those killed by state security agents during Fujimori’s rule clamor for him to stay behind bars. United Nations human rights experts decried the pardon as a “slap in the face” to victims.

When Alberto Fujimori led Peru nearly two decades ago it was common to see Kenji, his youngest son, traveling beside him or completing schoolwork in the presidential office. Keiko Fujimori, meanwhile, served as Peru’s first lady for six years after her parents divorced.

Alberto Fujimori has kept a low profile since his release, apologizing to Peruvians in a video posted on his Twitter account from his hospital bed but largely remaining silent.

Migraines Increase the Risk of Heart Attacks and Strokes

Mobile delivers high exit multiples despite broader market slowdown

In the world of mobile apps, numbers come in two sizes: big and bigger.

More than one billion people use Facebook’s mobile app every day. Instagram — another Facebook property — has well over 100 million photos and videos uploaded to the platform every 24 hours. And untold millions of emails, instant messages, small financial transactions and other interactions are facilitated by mobile devices every day.

But what about the financial side of the mobile business; specifically, venture investment and returns? All of that activity should bring in some considerable revenue, and a lot of startups are seeking a niche in this expansive ecosystem. By taking a look at the numbers behind two different ends of the startup life cycle — seed and early-stage funding on one side and exits on the other — a reasonable understanding of the mobile market today can be had.

In doing so, we’ll see just how much money has gone to startups in the mobile sector, and the (often good) returns they generate for investors.

Early-stage venture investment in mobile may be a bright spot

In prior coverageCrunchbase News explored the performance of U.S. venture funding, and, at least as far as seed and early-stage investment goes, 2017 was not a great year.

At the early stage, which consists of Series A and Series B rounds, deal and dollar volume is down from highs set around 2015. And while we’ve asserted that this trend is widespread, there are bright spots in the early-stage market. Mobile may be one of them.

In the chart below, we display seed and early-stage funding round data for startups in Crunchbase’s “mobile” category group from 2007 through the end of 2017.

This broad group includes companies in a number of categories, encompassing everything from mobile payments and mobile health apps to iOS, Android and, yes, even Windows Phone and Palm OS. And despite declines in overall deal volume (mostly attributable to reporting delays), the pullback from 2015 highs haven’t been as precipitous as other categories or the market as a whole.

Since 2012, the average seed or early-stage round in Crunchbase’s mobile category group has been on the upswing, according to reported data.

Emerging industries may be driving growth in round size

Part of the increase may be driven by the types of companies that are being funded.

One of the main trends over the past several years is the emergence and growth of mobile-facilitated “sharing economy” services. Sure, most of us are familiar with ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft, but the market has grown to include a much wider array of services.

A vibrant and highly competitive market for dockless bikes emerged seemingly out of thin air, as Crunchbase News has previously covered. Just in the last quarter of 2017, LimeBike raised $50 million in its Series B at a pre-money valuation of $175 million, and China-based Mobike raised an as-yet-unknown amount of private equity funding from LINE, the Japanese mobile messaging company.

Other mobile-focused apps in the sharing economy are gaining traction too. Hyr, a “marketplace that connects traditional businesses with workers to fill hourly paid shifts, on demand,” recently closed a $1.3 million seed round. And at the intersection of “the real world” and mobile, San Francisco-based Omni, which helps its users store and rent out their extra stuff, closed a $25 million Series B in January 2018.

And apart from the sharing economy companies, there’s also been a fair bit of investor interest in enterprise applications designed around mobile. For example, Peerfit, a Tampa-based company that aims to “redefine corporate wellness programs,” raised $10.3 million in a Series B round announced in January. On the cybersecurity front, HYPR Corp closed a $10 million Series A to fuel the growth of its mobile-based biometric authentication business.

Sharing economy and enterprise startups also share a common thread: they’re expensive to get started.

On the sharing economy side, it takes a lot of capital to build the supply and demand sides of a marketplace. Meanwhile, enterprise startups have to contend with long sales cycles and stricter requirements from their prospective customers. With a greater prevalence of capital-intensive sharing economy and enterprise startups in the mobile funding mix, it shouldn’t be surprising that the mobile category continues to fare better than others.

The economics of mobile are conducive to massive exit multiples

Venture investors often talk about investing in companies that will deliver a 10x return on invested capital. It goes without saying that doing so, and doing so consistently, is a challenge.

Recently, Crunchbase News surveyed the landscape of large “exits” and found that the life sciences offer a fairly deep pool of opportunities for large exit multiples. But the ratio of valuation to invested capital (VIC) for many of the deals highlighted in that article pale in comparison to some of the multiples to be found in mobile.

Below, we’ve highlighted just a few of the biggest M&A deals, in terms of exit multiples, to come out of the mobile sector. These companies were founded between 2003 and the present, known as the unicorn era.

Just like Crunchbase News’s earlier survey of exit multiples found that the mix of tech companies was surprisingly diverse, so too are the businesses in the table above.

However, one company connects two of these deals. Through a series of acquisitions, Facebook repositioned itself from a primarily desktop-based social network to being mobile-first. In the process, Facebook has become one side of a duopoly in mobile advertising. According to financial data compiled by Statista, Facebook’s mobile ad revenue went from basically $0 in 2012 to $8.92 billion by the end of 2017. Desktop ad revenue — some $1.2 billion — remained largely flat over the same period.

Although many believed that the $1 billion acquisition price for Instagram was far too high, Facebook raked in $4.1 billion in revenue from Instagram ads in 2017. Now that’s a multiple!

Why the decent funding and exit multiples?

As shown, the mobile sector produced some exits with very good multiples on invested capital, which is good for investors and entrepreneurs alike. The category also outperforms the general market.

So what makes the mobile category special? A few factors may be at play here. Shifts to more capital-intensive startups are being made. As far as exits go, some of the biggest came from companies with a more traditional software business model, one involving a large up-front investment of time and financial resources to build, but close to zero marginal costs to maintain and near-infinite potential to scale up.

But there is another factor to keep in mind. A few years ago, investors and the tech press were abuzz with excitement about mobile. Now that the fervor over the mobile sector has dimmed in terms of press, more exciting sectors like artificial intelligence, blockchain and others seem to be the center of attention lately. And while that may sound like a bad thing, it isn’t.

It’s not that mobile got any less exciting; it’s just become as common as the air.

Twitter doubles accounts notified of Russian interactions

Facebook survives Q4 despite slowest daily user growth ever

Despite worries about Russia and that passive News Feed scrolling hurts us, Facebook beat expectations again in its Q4 2017 earnings report. Facebook now has 1.4 billion daily users, up 2.18% compared to growing 3.8% to 1.37 billion users in Q3. That’s a sizeable slow down, and the lowest quarter-over-quarter percentage daily user growth ever reported by the company.

That could be because CEO Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook made changes including showing fewer viral videos “that reduced time spent on Facebook by roughly 50 million hours every day.” That equates to 2.14 minutes per daily user per day, or 5% of total time spent on Facebook. The viral video changes triggered Facebook’s first-ever decline in daily active users in the US & Canada region, which saw a 700,000 user decline.

Facebook reached $12.97 billion in revenue with $2.21 adjusted GAAP earnings per share if you don’t count a massive tax it had to pay on overseas cash that translated into a $0.77 reduction in EPS. Without that tax, it beat Wall Street’s estimates of $12.55 billion in revenue and $1.95 EPS, but with it reported $1.44 EPS.

Facebook’s monthly user count is now at 2.13 billion, up 3.39% from 2.06 billion in Q3 compared to 3.19% growth that quarter, so the monthly user growth sped up even as daily user growth slowed. Yet Facebook’s stickiness, or the percentage of monthly users that come back daily, held strong at 66% where it’s been since 2015. That shows people are still avidly returning to the site even if they spend less time there.

Average revenue per user climbed to $6.18, up 27% from a year ago. Average revenue was up 47% year-over-year, even though Facebook has been warning investors that it’s running out of space in the News Feed to put ads. Facebook raked in a record $4.26 billion in profit, down from $4.7 billion the previous quarter due to that big tax. Facebook’s share price was down at first down a steep 4% in after-hours trading, but now is up over 3%.

[Updates from the earnings call: Facebook announced that WhatsApp now has 1.5 billion monthly users, up from 1.3 billion in July. It announced a 700,000 daily user decline in the US & Canada due to reducing viral video visibility. Zuckerberg said he’s directed his company to priortize not the most meaningful content, but the content that drives the most meaningful interaction. Facebook’s research suggests total Story posting across apps will overtake feed posting.]

Overall, the results show how divorced Facebook’s user behavior is from the day-to-day news coverage blasting it for allowing Russian interference in US elections and for making us unhealthy zombie browsers. ComScore and Nielsen claim time spent on Facebook per U.S. user is declining, and that showed up in the daily user count growth. And Facebook purposefully made changes leading to its first ever decline of daily users in the US. But Facebook seems to be making up for that in international monthly user growth and squeezing more dollars out of each ad.

With the Snapchat threat largely neutralized via Instagram, Facebook’s biggest enemy is itself. Now it has to work to preemptively disarm any future privacy crises or other scandals, and co-opt the “Time Well Spent” rallying call before it becomes a “Time to leave Facebook” movement.

‘Facebook murder’ case: Family of Ohio man sue social media site

Facebook reduces time spent by 2 min/user/day to push well-being

Facebook is putting its short-term money where its mouth is, reducing the presence of viral videos in an effort to boost well-being of users of its site. In Facebook’s Q4 2017 earnings report today CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that “Already last quarter, we made changes to show fewer viral videos to make sure people’s time is well spent. In total, we made changes that reduced time spent on Facebook by roughly 50 million hours every day.”

That’s a reduction of roughly 2.14 minutes per day per user, given that Facebook has 1.4 billion users now. Zuckerberg later said that’s a reduction of total time spent on Facebook by 5 percent.

The viral video changes led to a reduction of 700,000 daily active users in the U.S. and Canada region. That’s an unprecedented decline for Facebook, which has done nothing but grow since its launch in 2004. Facebook’s CFO David Wehner says he believes this is a one-time decline and not a trend. That could depend on how many time-reducing changes Facebook is willing to make.

Even if Facebook hadn’t lost the 700,000 daily users in the U.S. and Canada, the company would still have had the slowest quarter-over-quarter percentage daily user growth ever, at 2.24 percent. The 2.18 percent growth it did experience is much lower than its previous worst quarters, Q4 2016 and Q4 2017, when it had 3 percent growth.

Still, once Facebook explained that U.S. and Canada DAU decline wasn’t a trend but a result of the viral video and well-being changes, Facebook’s share price rocketed up from being down as much as -4 percent in after-hours trading to around +4 percent. Investors may believe this means Facebook won’t be taking massive user count hits from the changes, and that the overall growth trend persists.

Facebook is making good on the promises Zuckerberg made on last quarter’s earnings call when he said “Protecting our community is more important than maximizing our profits.” It shows Facebook is executing on the big News Feed changes it announced earlier this month that were designed to reduce passive browsing, video consumption and news in favor of active interactions with close friends.

Today Zuckerberg explained that he’s changed the directive to his employees from showing the most meaningful content to people to showing content that drives the most meaningful interactions. That’s a subtle but important change that could decrease the prevalence of content people find informative or entertaining, but not special enough to share and talk about. Zuckerberg says the company will begin to judge itself by “The number of interactions that people have on the platform and off the platform that people report to us as meaningful.”

Facebook’s willingness to promote user well-being over its bottom line is unusual amongst big corporations. Some see it as an act of compassion. Others believe it’s just a long-term strategy designed to prevent a bigger “ditch Facebook” movement from emerging that could cost it a lot more than the time-spent reduction announced today.

But for now, investors trust the company will be able to make a more meaningful, less passive News Feed work. Less time spent could mean fewer ad impressions but deeper engagement which everything people see which might increase auction competition and lead to higher ad prices. Zuckerberg explained this saying that if you’re used to meaningless content, you grow accustomed to skipping stuff in your News Feed, and that can translate over to ads.

So, Facebook might actually earn just as much money or more by ditching its reliance on the blank-eyed scrolling addiction of its users.

Solo files complaint with USOC over US Soccer Federation

Former U.S. women’s national team goalkeeper Hope Solo has filed a complaint against the U.S. Soccer Federation with the U.S. Olympic Committee, accusing it of illegally favoring Major League Soccer.

Solo, among eight candidates running in the Feb. 10 election to succeed Sunil Gulati as USSF president, said in a 38-page complaint announced Tuesday that ”the USSF’s paramount concern has become protecting and nurturing the MLS, even if at the expense of other stakeholders, including those involved in professional women’s and amateur soccer.”

She filed the complaint under the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act and asked that the USOC place the USSF on probation for up to 180 days and require soccer’s U.S. governing body to correct the conditions she alleges are improper.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber has endorsed Kathy Carter, on leave as president of Soccer United Marketing, to succeed Gulati. SUM was launched in 2002 and holds exclusive commercial rights to Major League Soccer and the USSF.

Solo accused the USSF of lacking financial transparency, responsibility to its members and independence and of failing to provide equal support for women and sufficient opportunities for athletes with ambulatory cerebral palsy, stroke or traumatic brain injury.

USSF spokesman Neil Buethe and USOC spokesman Mark Jones did not respond to emails seeking comment.

North Korea going to the Winter Olympics: 5 things to know

Its participation, negotiated in landmark talks at the heavily fortified border between the two in little more than a week, has been hailed as a diplomatic breakthrough that could herald peace on the Korean peninsula.

However, others fear that South Korea has fallen for a North Korean charm offensive and warned the international community not to be complacent.

So how could North Korean participation at the Games play out?

North Korean cheering squad hold their national flag and cheer 04 September 2005.

Which North Korean athletes are expected to attend?

While the details have yet to be ironed out, it is very likely that figure skaters Ryom Tae Ok and Kim Ju Sik will be given a wild card to compete.

The nations have also agreed to form a joint North and South Korean women’s ice hockey team, and North Korea plans to send its 230-member strong “cheer squad” to support its athletes.

North and South Korean skiers will train together at the Masikryong Ski Resort resort in North Korea before the Olympics start — although North Korea skiers aren’t expected to compete.

In addition to the athletes, an art troupe, a 30-strong North Korean Taekwondo demonstration team and a press corp will travel south, South Korean Unification Ministry spokesman Chun Hae-sung told reporters in Seoul.

A delegation of 150 North Korean athletes and supporters will attend the Paralympics, Seoul’s Unification Ministry said.

How are South Koreans reacting to the North’s participation?

Many South Koreans have welcomed the talks and the perceived reduction in tensions but it’s not been universally welcomed.

South Korea’s women’s ice hockey coach, Canadian national Sarah Murray, told South Korean news agency Yonhap that the inclusion of hockey players in a unified Korean squad would “damage” some of her players.

“It’s hard because the players have earned their spots and they think they deserve to go to the Olympics. Then you have people being added later. It definitely affects our players,” said Murray.

Previously, South Korean Sports Minister Do Jong-hwan and South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon have both said that adding North Koreans to the team won’t affect their Southern teammates’ playing time, but with a limited roster — only 22 players — some South Korean players look set to miss their chance to play on one of their sport’s biggest stages, and in front of a home crowd.

How do other countries feel about the North Korean delegation taking part?

Some of Seoul’s allies are voicing concern Pyongyang may be using the talks to buy time to pursue its weapons program.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned of complacency at a summit in Vancouver, Tuesday, where the top diplomats from the United States, Japan, Canada and the United Kingdom met to discuss North Korea.
While the US remains cautiously optimistic that the dialogue could eventually provide fertile ground for diplomacy, the US Air Force has deployed six nuclear-capable B-52 bombers to Guam, adding more firepower to the region.
Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono called on the international community to be clear-eyed about North Korea’s motivations for participating in the talks.

“I believe that North Korea wants to buy some time to continue their nuclear and missile programs,” Kono said at the Vancouver meeting. “It’s not the time to ease pressure towards North Korea.”

WhatsApp hits 1.5 billion monthly users. $19B? Not so bad.

Facebook’s $19 billion acquisition of WhatsApp sounds smarter and smarter. Today CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on the Q4 2017 earnings call that WhatsApp now has 1.5 billion users and sees 60 billion messages sent per day. That’s compared to 1.3 billion monthly users and 1 billion daily active users in July.

The massive growth makes Facebook’s choice to pay over $19 billion to acquire WhatsApp look prescient. At the time in 2014, WhatsApp had just 450 million monthly active users and 315 million daily active users.

In a slight to Snapchat, Zuckergberg also noted that Instagram and WhatsApp are the #1 and #2 most popular Story sharing products, referring to those apps’ clones of Snapchat Stories. Each now each has 300 million daily active users, compared to 178 million on Snapchat as a whole.

People thought Facebook was crazy to pay such a high price. But messaging is the most critical and time-consuming activity on mobile. And if Facebook didn’t buy WhatsApp, Google probably would have, and messaging would be a two-horse race. Instead, Facebook is massively dominant everywhere with China between the 1.3 billion user Messenger and 1.5 billion user Whatsapp.

Now Facebook is finally getting serious about monetizing WhatsApp with the recent launch of the WhatsApp for Business app. Facebook plans to charge business owners for additional commerce, customer service, or broadcasting tools. And with such a massive audience, merchants will be clamoring for them.

Qualcomm earnings top estimates on surge in modem chip sales

(Reuters) – Chipmaker Qualcomm Inc’s (QCOM.O) earnings and revenue exceeded Wall Street forecasts for the first fiscal quarter as demand surged for its chips used in smartphones and cars, making up for a fall in licensing revenue.

The results come as the San Diego-based chipmaker tries to rebuff a $103-billion takeover approach by Broadcom Ltd (AVGO.O) and close its long-pending $38-billion deal to buy automotive chip maker NXP Semiconductors (NXPI.O).

Qualcomm is trying to convince shareholders that it can boost earnings as a standalone company through a $1 billion cost reduction plan and by resolving license disputes including a high-profile patent battle with Apple Inc (AAPL.O).

But its earnings and revenue forecasts for the ongoing March quarter were well below what analysts were expecting, sending Qualcomm shares slightly lower in after-hours trading on Wednesday.

Qualcomm expects $4.8 billion to $5.6 billion in second-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings per share of 65 cents to 75 cents. Analysts had estimated revenue of $5.58 billion and earnings of 85 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue at Qualcomm’s CDMA technologies unit rose 13 percent to $4.65 billion in the first quarter ended Dec. 24. The business makes modem chips for phones as well as products for connected devices including cars and speakers.

The licensing business recorded a 28 percent fall in revenue to $1.30 billion, weighed down by the Apple dispute.

Apple sued Qualcomm last January, accusing it of overcharging for chips and of refusing to pay some $1 billion in promised rebates.

“We remain open to finding a path to resolution (with Apple),” Qualcomm Chief Executive Steve Mollenkopf said on a call with analysts.

Qualcomm posted a net loss of $5.95 billion compared to a profit of $682 million a year earlier, reflecting a $6 billion one-time charge because of new U.S. tax laws and a $868 million charge for a fine imposed by the Korea Fair Trade Commission.

Excluding one-time items, Qualcomm earned 98 cents per share, topping analysts’ average estimate of 91 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue rose 1.2 percent to $6.07 billion and exceeded analysts’ estimates of $5.93 billion.

Twitter now says 1.4 million people interacted with Russian trolls during 2016 presidential campaign

Twitter has now updated the number of people engaging with Russian trolls during the 2016 presidential campaign to 1.4 million. That’s more than double the initial 677,775 Twitter originally said had seen, followed or retweeted one of these accounts earlier this month.

The new number reflects those who may have also replied to or @ mentioned these accounts.

“We have expanded the number of people notified about interactions with Twitter accounts potentially connected to a propaganda effort by a Russian government-linked organization known as the Internet Research Agency,” Twitter said in the update. “Our goal in providing these notifications is to advance public awareness of and engagement with the important issues raised in our blog post, and provide greater transparency to our account holders and the public.”

Twitter also said it would only notify these people of certain interactions but that it would not be notifying everyone who ever saw one of these accounts on its platform.

However, Twitter also noted it may notify more people in the future. “As our review continues, we may also email additional users,” Twitter said. “If and when we do so, we will do our best to keep the public updated.”

The total number of Russian-linked troll accounts, as we reported earlier in January, is over 50,000, of which 3,800 were thought to be from the Internet Research Agency (IRA).

The IRA is a Russian company with Kremlin ties that has been exposed as organizing purposeful disinformation campaigns in the U.S. and elsewhere — including attempting to influence the 2016 presidential election.

The news furthers the perception that social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook, which has acknowledged its own Russian troll army problems during the election, are not making enough of an effort to shutter disinformation campaigns that have contributed to swaying the voting public.

Further — and despite a promise of more transparency — the notification seems to have added to the confusion. Ars Technica’s Cyrus Farivar, who was sent one of the notification emails, lamented that Twitter didn’t name names. “What exactly am I supposed to do with this email?,” Farivar asked.

Here’s the full update from Twitter’s blog:

Updated on January 31, 2018

We have expanded the number of people notified about interactions with Twitter accounts potentially connected to a propaganda effort by a Russian government-linked organization known as the Internet Research Agency. Our notice efforts are focused on certain types of interactions, and they will not encompass every person that ever saw this content. Our goal in providing these notifications is to advance public awareness of and engagement with the important issues raised in our blog post, and provide greater transparency to our account holders and the public.

We have now sent notices to Twitter users with an active email address who our records indicate are based in the US and fall into at least one of the following categories:

  • People who directly engaged during the election period with the 3,814 IRA-linked accounts we identified, either by Retweeting, quoting, replying to, mentioning, or liking those accounts or content created by those accounts;
  • People who were actively following one of the identified IRA-linked accounts at the time those accounts were suspended; and
  • People who opt out of receiving most email updates from Twitter and would not have received our initial notice based on their email settings.

Approximately 1.4 million people have now received a notification from Twitter. We will be sending a short survey to a small group of people who received our notification to gain feedback on this process. As our review continues, we may also email additional users. If and when we do so, we will do our best to keep the public updated.

Ohio AG ‘encouraged’ after start of opioid lawsuit talks

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said Wednesday during the start of settlement talks for more than 250 federal lawsuits filed against pharmaceutical companies and distributors over the nation’s opioid epidemic that he’s encouraged by the judge’s understanding of the problem and commitment to achieving a resolution.

U.S. District Judge Dan Polster in Cleveland has been assigned to oversee what many plaintiffs hope will be a global settlement with the pharmaceutical industry that would also encompass lawsuits filed in state courts. Comparisons are being made to the 1998 lawsuit settlement against tobacco companies that resulted in an agreement to pay $206 billion to 46 states over a 25-year period.

Six state attorneys general, representatives from numerous states and dozens of attorneys from both sides made presentations and answered Polster’s questions in a courtroom closed to the public and the media.

DeWine, a Republican candidate for governor in 2018, had been asked by Polster to speak on behalf of attorneys general in other states that have filed state court lawsuits against the industry.

Polster has called the epidemic “100 percent man-made” and has said other branches of government have “punted” on solving it.

“He’s dead serious about getting something resolved,” DeWine later told reporters. “I’m very encouraged.”

Asked if he heard anything hopeful from the industry’s attorneys, DeWine said, “I didn’t expect to be encouraged by their side.”

Industry attorneys approached outside the courtroom declined to be interviewed.

Communities across the country have been ravaged by an epidemic that involves highly addictive painkillers like OxyContin and Vicodin, their generic equivalents and deadly street drugs like fentanyl and heroin. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said 42,000 people died of opioid overdoses in 2016, a number that’s expected to climb even higher once 2017 deaths are tallied later this year.

In addition to DeWine, attorneys general from Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina and Virginia attended the settlement talks. It wasn’t clear how many representatives from other states were in Polster’s courtroom.

Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear, a Democrat, said Wednesday that efforts to hold the pharmaceutical industry accountable for the damage they’ve wrought is a bipartisan effort.

Beshear and DeWine said massive amounts of money are needed to deal with an epidemic that is costing their states billions of dollars a year. They said money is needed to pay for drug treatment and education and to buttress social service and law enforcement agencies serving on the front lines of the epidemic.

Beshear said his hope is to see multinational corporations that have made billions of dollars selling painkillers become part of the solution.

“If you call yourself a health care company, and not simply a for-profit corporation, you should be willing to do that,” Beshear said.

We’ll get to some of the least useless suggestions below, but first here are some of the broad trends revealed by the approximately 3,000 responses submitted on Facebook, Twitter, our website and directly to my email.

There was plenty of support for widely publicized names already coined for the generation born, roughly, between 1995 and 2015: Generation Z, Homeland Generation, Post-Millennials and iGeneration.

A significant minority had grown comfortable with “Generation Z,” including Racquel Glassner, 22, of Olympia, Wash.

“I’ve never heard iGeneration before, but that is really horrendous,” she said. “Our whole generation shouldn’t be branded by Apple. Gen Z is the final generation of the 1900s, and a generational title using the last letter in the alphabet seems fitting.”

(It should be noted that iGeneration or iGen, a name coined by the social psychologist Jean Twenge, had plenty of fans. Dr. Twenge herself chimed in on Twitter: “You know my answer.”)

The youngest respondent I tracked down was Mari Sobota, 8, a third-grader in Madison, Wis., who wrote in to say that her generation would be known for “girl power!”

Mari, 8, could identify an obvious generational difference between her and her 12-year-old sister Cassandra, and their mother, Carousel Bayrd. “We both like cotton candy, and my mom hates that,” she said.

The oldest respondent to give her age was 91-year-old Annette Benedict, of the Bronx. “I figure you’re not an ageist,” she wrote, a gambit that all but ensured her inclusion. Her suggested name was The Thumbies, for the digit used to operate smartphones. “I think that suits them,” she said, chuckling, when I called her.

A significant number rejected the age ranges we selected, especially 22-year-olds who consider themselves millennials, like Zach Witkin, of Providence, R.I., who said he could clearly recall Sept. 11, 2001, an unforgettable day for many older respondents. He was 6 then.

“Maybe we could make a firm cut-off just beyond 1995?“ he suggested.

Others were glad to escape a generational label so tarnished by, yes, the media.

The most popular Facebook comment came from Alexandra Della Santina, 22, an engineer at Boeing in Philadelphia.

“I wouldn’t mind being called Generation Scapegoat,” she wrote. “It would be kind of the tongue-in-cheek dry humor that I see in this generation. And when baby boomers and Generation X or Y or whatever decide to start using us as punching bags instead of millennials, it’s gonna be much harder to whine about us if they’re forced to call us The Scapegoats.”

Roshan Mueller, 11, was one of many to suggest the Meme Generation. “I think it goes with how our generation goes through life,” he explained in a phone interview, with his mom listening in. “We go through life fast. And just like that, memes spread fast.”

We also heard from multiple people suggesting Memelords, Memennials and Generation Snap. Also, the Hopeful Generation, the Anxious Generation, Generation Fix-It and The Cleaner-Uppers. Some simply wrote “Doomed.” The Last Generation and the Final Generation were also popular.

Andrea Habiba, 15, of Houston, suggested the Sisu Generation. “Sisu is a Finnish word that roughly translate to determination in the face of adversity, and my generation will be facing many adversity such as fixing the economy, global warming, the threat of terrorism and so on,” she wrote.

Benton Molina, 21, of Athens, Ohio, suggested we call the new youngs Spimes. The term, coined by the science fiction author Bruce Sterling, refers to an object hooked into the internet of things: aware of its environment, constantly documenting itself, its existence mirrored in the cloud.

“Post-millenials share these characteristics,” Mr. Molina observed. “They are central units in small, personal clusters of technological nodes (made of both people and machines) who leave a data trail throughout their entire lives.”

But we had a favorite. Four separate people suggested Deltas or the Delta Generation. Kelsy Hillesheim, a 22-year-old New Yorker, provided the most thoughtful explanation.

“Delta is used to denote change and uncertainty in mathematics and the sciences, and my generation was shaped by change and uncertainty,” she explained, mentioning terror attacks, wars, the Great Recession and the 2016 election. “I do not have much memory of a sustained time of stability, and I’m on the older end of what you’re looking for, though I imagine this is also the case for younger deltas.”

“We take nothing for granted,” she continued. “We were kids when our parents lost their jobs in the recession. We also are a generation of demographic shift — we are more diverse than any in American history. We generally see it as something to embrace, and welcome changes that could make for a more inclusive and just America.”

Delta also implies members of this generation will be agents of change, not just people reacting to it, she said. “We are not passive products of circumstance, but active members of society with agency to affect the course of history, and will to build each other up to make things better,” she added. “We know all too well that adults aren’t doing so today.”

Facebook survives Q4 with slowing 1.4B daily users but record $12.97B revenue

Despite worries about Russia and that passive News Feed scrolling hurts us, Facebook beat expectations again in its Q4 2017 earnings report. Facebook now has 1.4 billion daily users, up 2.18% compared to growing 3.8% to 1.37 billion users in Q3. That’s a sizeable slow down, and the lowest quarter-over-quarter percentage daily user growth ever reported by the company.

That could be because CEO Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook made changes including showing fewer viral videos “that reduced time spent on Facebook by roughly 50 million hours every day.” That equates to 2.14 minutes per daily user per day.

Facebook reached $12.97 billion in revenue with $2.21 adjusted GAAP earnings per share if you don’t count a massive tax it had to pay on overseas cash that translated into a $0.77 reduction in EPS, but it still beat Wall Street’s estimates of $12.55 billion in revenue and $1.95 EPS.

Facebook raked in a record $4.26 billion in profit, down from $4.7 billion the previous quarter due to that big tax. Facebook’s share price was down a steep 4% in after-hours trading.

Overall, the results show how divorced Facebook’s user behavior is from the day-to-day news coverage blasting it for allowing Russian interference in US elections and for making us unhealthy zombie browsers. ComScore and Nielsen claim time spent on Facebook per U.S. user is declining, and that showed up in the daily user count growth, but Facebook seems to be making up for that in international monthly user growth and squeezing more dollars out of each ad.

Microsoft’s Azure revenue nearly doubled year-over-year in its second quarter

Microsoft posted a relatively good second quarter this year that continued the ongoing process of its growth into a major cloud entity, in addition to saying it would be taking a significant charge as part of the major tax bill signed late last year.

In particular, Microsoft said that its Azure revenue grew 98% year-over-year — a long-running theme alongside many other lines that equate to Microsoft’s efforts in the cloud offsetting many of the major shifts in computing that first led Microsoft to be a behemoth. The company said it would be taking a $13.8 billion charge related to the newly-passed tax bill. All this, together with earnings that just about beat what Wall Street was looking for, led to a collective shrug for investors as the stock basically went nowhere.

Since Nadella has taken over, much of the narrative has shifted to the transition of Microsoft to a true player in cloud computing. As Amazon’s Web Services continues to become a behemoth and Google makes its own play, Microsoft too has found itself diving deep into the cloud and going head-to-head with Google and Amazon to try and woo as many developers as possible.

So far, that’s more or less paid off. As more and more companies start to find value in using up computing resources on-demand rather than investing heavily in their own hardware, Microsoft has ridden that wave along with others to build out a massive business. In October, the company said it exceeded the $20 billion ARR for its commercial cloud target it set about two years ago. Under Nadella, Microsoft’s stock has more than doubled:

In addition, Microsoft saw some continuing growth from some of its other services including LinkedIn. That alone contributed about $1.3 billion in revenue to Microsoft, while its overall division (called Productivity and Business Processes) including LinkedIn and Office commercial products grew around 25% year-over-year this quarter to $9 billion in revenue.

Here’s the final scorecard for the company:

  • Q2 earnings: 96 cents per share, compared to Wall Street targets of 86 cents per share.
  • Q2 revenue: $28.92 billion, compared to Wall Street’s expectation of $28.4 billion in revenue.
  • Commercial Cloud revenue: $5.3 billion, up 56% year-over-year
  • Intelligent Cloud revenue (includes Azure): $7.8 billion
  • Azure revenue growth: 98%
