Austrian climber killed, two British men rescued on Pakistani peak – army

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – Pakistani military helicopters rescued two British mountaineers in the north of the country on Sunday after an avalanche that killed their Austrian climbing partner, the military said.

The three climbers were hit by the avalanche at an altitude of 19,300 feet (5,883 meters) on Friday while trying to reach the summit of Ultra Sar peak near Hunza, the Pakistani army said in a statement.

Austrian Christian Huber was killed and the two British climbers, Bruce Normand and Miller Timothy, suffered injuries and were stranded for two days.

The army said bad weather prevented a rescue mission immediately after it was requested on Saturday, but on Sunday morning helicopters reached the area, bringing down the two climbers and the body of Huber.

Pakistan’s northern regions are home to several mountain peaks, including the K2, in the Karakorum mountains along the border between China and Pakistan, which is the world’s second highest after Mount Everest in Nepal.

Last summer, a Spanish man and an Argentinian perished in an avalanche while trying to scale Nanga Parbat, known as “Killer Mountain” due to the high number of lives it has claimed over the years.

1st match, Zimbabwe Twenty20 Tri-Series at Harare, Jul 1 2018 | Match Summary

1.14pm That is that. Pakistan, the No.1 T20I side, have brushed off the depleted hosts. Kyle Jarvis, who had injured his bowling hand in the first innings, will not bat. The injury occured in the 14th over of the innings, when Fakhar Zaman hoicked a delivery from Ryan Burl into the leg side. Sprinting around the boundary from wide long-on, Jarvis dived to his right attempting to hold onto a low catch. The difficult chance was spilled, and it was immediately apparent that Jarvis had suffered an injury when he collapsed in pain and signalled to the team physio, who rushed onto the field. Jarvis was taken to hospital and X-rayed for a suspected broken bone in his right thumb. Mind you, Zimbabwe are already without five frontline players, including Cremer and Raza.

Musakanda, the debutant, provided the lone source of resistance for Zimbabwe in the chase with an eye-catching 43. The inexperienced batting line-up has plenty of work to do if they are to even compete in this tri-series against Pakistan and Australia. All the Pakistan bowlers had a good workout under the Harare sun. Do stick around for the presentations

Hamilton Masakadza, Zimbabwe captain: Only bright point was winning the toss. They had a good Powerplay and put us under pressure. Yeah, I thought we have them 20 runs extra. They guys filled in okay but we lost our way a bit the middle period.

Sarfraz Ahmed, Pakistan captain: First of all thanks to almighty Allah. The way Zaman, Asif, and Malik did the job for us…It looked like a good batting pitch. The ball did not come on in the first innings, but in the second it came on nicely. Credit goes to the bowlers, especially Usman and Nawaz. Plenty of cricket to be played in the series. Hopefully, we will do well.

Asif Ali is the Player of the Match

Outkast: “Poor Zimbabwe! Well done Pakistan! I agree with you @Thabani. Zimbabwe really don’t have much of a choice now but to blood in the youngsters. Mire, Hami and Chigumbura are seniors, but together they simply have to contribute at least 5 overs with the ball: Murray(wk), Kamunhukamwe, Chari, Hami(c), Musakanda, Chigumbura, Mire, Chisoro, Jarvis, Magarira, Muzarabani”

That’s a wrap of this game. Many thanks for your warm company and comments. Looking forward to your company tomorrow as well. Until then, this is Deivarayan Muthu signing off on the behalf of Thilak Ram. Cheers

Mohammad Hafeez to Muzarabani, OUT, Hafeez tosses up another offbreak, starts outside off and breaks back in. Muzarabani aims for a mighty leg-side swipe but the bowler sneaks through his defences and hits the top of middle stump

B Muzarabani b Mohammad Hafeez 0 (4m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Soya bean extract hailed as alternative to HRT

An extract from soya beans is being hailed as an alternative to hormone replacement therapy for combating hot flushes.

For years, women have avoided HRT due to fears about breast and womb cancer. Only about one in six British women going through the menopause currently take it.

But a non-hormonal substitute based on soya has now been launched with one head-to-head study showing it to be equally as effective as ‘standard’ HRT – without the risk of promoting cancerous cell growth.

After taking the pill for a month, three-quarters of 2,500 women trialling Femarelle in another study said it had reduced the number of hot flushes they suffered daily.

A similar number reported relief from joint pain, muscle pain and headaches.

Professor Andrea Genazzani, President of the International Society of Gynaecological Endocrinology, said: ‘Using Femarelle, we have a significant relief of menopausal symptoms… but it does not have an effect [promoting growth of cancerous cells] on the breasts or the lining of the womb.’

Last night, gynaecologist Haitham Hamoda, of the British Menopause Society, stressed the head-to-head trial was ‘small’ – involving just 89 women – and as yet there was no long-term safety data on Femarelle. He also noted standard HRT was derived from plants too. ‘It’s not a question of this product being “natural” and HRT being “artificial”,’ he said.

Femarelle contains an active ingredient called DT56a, which acts like the sex hormone oestrogen in some body tissues, such as areas of the brain responsible for mood and temperature regulation, but not in others, notably the breasts and womb. Crucially, it does not appear to promote growth of ‘oestrogen receptive’ breast cancer cells.

Femarelle is sold as a food supplement, rather than being made available as a prescription medicine, as makers Glenmark Pharma have decided against pursuing a pharmaceutical licence. It costs £27 a month.
