NZ 175/3 (69.0 ov, HM Nicholls 24*, KS Williamson 91*, C Overton 0/43) – Stumps | Match Summary

9.30 pm As far as statements go, that was emphatic. New Zealand chose to bowl. Trent Boult (6-32) and Tim Southee (4-25) knocked England over for 58. And the captain Kane Wiliamson is going to outscore the opposition in multiples. He’s 91 not out, chasing hjis 18th Test hundred, which would be a national record.

“We made the call a coupel of hours prior,” coach Mike Hesson says about the toss. “We hoped it would do a bit more. But it did nothing. Once Trent and Tim found their length, they were exceptional. Dream day would be batting out a couple of sessions, getting a big lead. But you don’t win Test matches on the first day”

England were dismal. They were up against a swing bowler on top of his game, but they lack of footwork was shocking. The bowlers did as hard as they could considering the meagre cushion they were given. Ben Stokes is not quite fit enough to take on that challenge, and is playing as a specialist batsman, but Stuart Broad took the new ball again and he was so very menacing in his first spell, eventually took his 400th Test wicket. But he goes back to the dressing room and stares at the scoreboard, which says his team is 117 runs behind after only 90 overs of cricket. That’s got to be dispiriting. That’s all we have from ball-by-ball here. Jump over to the drama in Cape Town where South Africa have put Australia in to bat in what could be a series-deciding Test match.

Overton to Williamson, no run, he’s right behind the shortish delivery outside off and wraps up a fantastic day for New Zealand cricket

James: “Balaji, Joe Root was on 124 not out at the close on day 1 at Trent Bridge in 2015.”

Lucas: “@Balaji Warner did it against India at the WACA in 2011 with a century in the last session.”

Overton to Nicholls, 1 run, waits on the back of a length delivery to arrive and then gently knocks it down to long leg
