At least 27 children dead as school bus plunges into gorge in India

At least 27 children have died after a school bus plunged 200 feet (60m) into a gorge in the Himalayan foothills in India.

The accident happened in the Kangra Valley in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh.

Three adults also died, the state’s transport minister, Govind Singh Takur, told the Press Trust of India news agency.

At least a dozen people were taken to hospital. Rescue teams have reached the scene.

Initial reports suggest the driver, who also died, was speeding and lost control at the edge of the gorge, police officer Sunil Kumar said, adding that the rescue operation would continue into the night.

The bus was carrying children studying at a private school in Nurpur town, 300 km (185 miles) from the state capital, Shimla.

“I am deeply anguished by the loss of lives,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted. “My prayers and solidarity are with those who lost their near and dear ones.”

Indian roads are the most deadly in the world. According to government data, almost 150,000 people were killed in accidents in 2015.
