Former Conservative MP Harvey Proctor has told Sky News he is taking legal action against the Metropolitan Police and a man who accused him of historical child sex abuse allegations.
Fighting back tears and with his voice breaking, Mr Proctor said: “The police have destroyed my life.
“It will not be… it cannot be the same as it was before.”
Mr Proctor was identified as a suspect during Operation Midland.
The investigation into an alleged paedophile ring operating in Westminster in the 1980s collapsed without a single conviction.
But despite an apology from police, Harvey Proctor has received no compensation.
He has lost his job, his home and his reputation.
“I’m certainly not the same person that I was in 2015 and redress can never… the things can never be put right.
“Physically and mentally I think I have been damaged and I’m having some therapy treatments but having the burden of dealing with these matters day in day out now for over three years is taking its toll.”
Mr Proctor’s lawyers have been negotiating with police for compensation for more than a year but an agreement cannot be reached, forcing Mr Proctor to take legal action.
Much of the case against Mr Proctor depended on the testimony of an accuser known only as “Nick”.
Mr Proctor told us he was initiating legal action against this man too.
The Metropolitan Police has agreed to pay Lord Bramall and also Lady Brittan – the widow of former home secretary Leon Brittan – about £100,000 each in compensation for raiding their homes during Operation Midland.
The force confirmed they have received a claim from Mr Proctor’s lawyers and that they will be filing a defence.
It was hoped that the two sides could agree on compensation without going to court.
“The then-Commissioner for the metropolis Bernard Hogan Howe went on television and repeated to me that he was sorry and made it clear that we were all innocent but that cannot put right all the things that have gone wrong.”
Mr Proctor says no amount of money can restore his life.
But he cannot survive any longer on an apology alone.
