Kim Jong Un says he will soon visit South Korean President Moon Jae-In in Seoul

Kim Jong Un will ‘soon’ visit Seoul, South Korea’s President Moon announces in further thawing of hostilities between the two nations

  • South Korean leader Moon Jae-In made the announcement in Parliament today
  • Kim Jong Un promised to visit ‘within a year’ when pair met in September
  • It is not yet clear whether President Moon was simply repeating earlier promise

South Korean President Moon Jae-in says North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will ‘soon’ visit Seoul.

Moon didn’t provide any other details about the trip during a speech on the economy given before the parliament Thursday.

Moon has previously said that Kim told him he would visit Seoul within this year when the leaders met in Pyongyang in September.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Moon was repeating his previous statement or if he had new details about Kim’s trip.

Moon also says a second North Korea-U.S. summit is ‘near at hand.’

He says Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit North Korea and that Kim is to travel to Russia soon.

Moon has shuttled between North Korea and the United States to arrange nuclear talks.

South Korea’s presidential office said it had no further details to add to Moon’s speech about the impending trip.

When the pair came together for a historic meeting in September, the North Korean leader had agreed to several concessions on denuclearization and even discussed a joint North and South Korea Olympic bid in 2032.

Moon said the North had agreed to dismantle missile sites and take other steps such as closing its main Yongbyon nuclear complex if the United States took reciprocal measures.

North and South Korea also reportedly agreed the Korean Peninsula should turn into a ‘land of peace without nuclear weapons and nuclear threats,’ Moon said following the conclusion of his summit talks with the North Korean leader.

When Kim does visit South Korea he will become the first North Korean leader to cross the border since the end of the Korean War in 1953.

BCCI forced to reschedule matches due to unavailability of umpires

On the eve of the start of the Ranji Trophy, the state units have received a letter from the BCCI asking them to adjust the logistics and travel arrangements of their teams in three different events because of the unavailability of umpires and match officials for those days.

In a press conference in August, called to apprise the media of the BCCI’s readiness to stage India’s biggest-ever domestic season, Saba Karim, the GM of cricket operations, had said the BCCI was still recruiting more umpires keeping in mind the increased number of matches this season, but he had also promised the quality of the personnel would not be compromised.

With newer teams entering the fray in accordance with the Lodha Committee’s recommendations – there are 37 teams in the Ranji Trophy this season, up from 28 last season – Karim said the BCCI was going from organising 900 matches a year to over 2000. As on August 31, the BCCI still needed about 15 more umpires and 12 match referees, not to mention more scorers and video analysts.

Karim told ESPNcricinfo that the BCCI had filled up those vacancies but during the heaviest part of the season it didn’t find the right permutations and combinations. “Once we drew out the fixtures, we asked the umpires and match officials for their availability,” Karim said. “It just so happened that the officials we have available don’t fulfil the neutrality qualification or they are not the right grade. We have sufficient umpires and match officials to conduct the whole season now after these adjustments.”

The third round and the knockouts of the Cooch Behar Trophy and the Under-19 four-day competition have been pushed back by almost a month each. The knockouts of the senior women’s one-day tournament have been postponed by two days.

“In view of the unavailability of umpires during the month of December 2018, matches have been rescheduled as per the schedule below.” Karim wrote in a letter to all the state units, the office bearers, the CoA, the CEO and the CFO of the BCCI. “You are requested to make logistic arrangements accordingly.”

Gooch names legendary SA batsman in best ever XI

Cape Town – Former England skipper Graham Gooch has named his best-ever cricketing XI, with legendary batsman Barry Richards the only South African represented.

Gooch revealed his all-time XI on the Lord’s Cricket YouTube channel, with the criteria being that he had to have played with or against them, or have been strongly influenced by the players mentioned.

The 66-year-old Englishman named the “usual suspects”, which included Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne, both of whom regularly make such lists.

Gooch, who played 118 Tests for England and scored 8 900 runs, revealed a line-up with former greats that he had the privilege of playing with during his career, which spanned from 1973 to 2000.

Richards was the first player listed on Gooch’s list and the Englishman did not shy from complimenting him.

“Simply the most graceful and my favourite batsman of all-time,” said Gooch.

Richards, who was forced to play elsewhere by South Africa’s isolation, only managed to play four Tests for South Africa scoring 508 runs with an average of 72.57.

The 73-year-old, whose career spanned from 1964/65-1982/83, played in 339 First Class games and scored 28 358 runs.

Graham Gooch’s all-time XI:

Barry Richards (South Africa), Geoffrey Boycott (England), Sir Viv Richards (West Indies), Sachin Tendulkar (India), Allan Border (Australia), Sir Ian Botham (England), Alan Knott (England – wicketkeeper), Shane Warne (Australia), Wasim Akram (Pakistan), Malcolm Marshall (West Indies), Dennis Lillee (New Zealand)

Malaika Arora speaks about Me Too movement – Here’s why she considers it more of a noise and less of a change

‘);

Well, the words Me Too have taken a whole new different meaning in the past few months. The movement or campaign, whatever one wants to term, has spread like wild fire with many actors, actresses, filmmakers and other personalities from the Indian entertainment industry have been speaking for, against or revealing their own experiences of sexual harassment. Malaika Arora, who has by far stayed silent on the controversy, decided to speak up on the same recently.

Malaika Arora speaks about Me Too movement - Here’s why she considers it more of a noise and less of a change

The dancer turned reality show judge, who is currently busy with India’s Got Talent, decided to speak on the matter in recent reports. As per the opinion shared by Malaika Arora in these reports, she considers Me Too movement as more of noise rather than change. According to her, a movement is something that fosters change and when it comes to Me Too, she has maintained that she hears people talk about it but doesn’t see change anywhere. And hence, she considers it as a noise more!

Further elaborating on the same statement, Malaika Arora reportedly addressed about the ongoing issue in Bollywood industry and also agreed that a lot has been happening within fraternity currently. At the same time, she doesn’t believe it is change because she wants people to actually do something about it rather than just discussing about it. And she also further explained that Me Too cannot become a movement overnight because to make an impact like any other movement, people may have to change their mindset. And this, like she said, isn’t an easy task!

Readers may be aware that during the past couple of months, the Me Too movement has brought forth names of some of the most respected celebrities like Nana Patekar, Sajid Khan, Kailash Kher, Anu Malik, Alok Nath, Vikas Bahl amongst others. The movement started flaring up after Tanushree Dutta gave an explosive interview about Nana Patekar misbehaving with her on the sets of Horn Ok Pleassss way back in 2008.

L’Oréal’s Q3 Beats Estimates, Agon Touts Asia

PARIS — L’Oréal posted its highest quarterly growth rate in a decade in the third quarter of the year, boosted by business from its Luxe and Active Cosmetics divisions.
The world’s largest beauty company said Tuesday night, after the close of the Paris Bourse, that its sales in the three months ended Sept. 30 reached 6.47 billion euros, up 6.2 percent in reported terms and 7.5 percent on a like-for-like basis, broadly beating financial analysts’ expectations.
“Organic sales growth is ‘booming’ at 7.5 percent, well above 5.9 percent consensus expectations we felt as a bit too optimistic. Indeed, we were expecting 5.3 percent,” wrote Pierre Tegner, an analyst with ODDO BHF, in a note. He highlighted a clear quarterly sequential acceleration in L’Oréal’s Luxe and Active Cosmetics divisions, plus in Asia and Eastern Europe.
Eva Quiroga, an analyst at Deutsche Bank, titled her note “3Q18: perfect growth, imperfect mix.” She said the positive surprise came from L’Oréal Luxe, with like-for-like sales growth of 15.6 percent, “well ahead of consensus,” and Active Cosmetics, with a 13.1 percent comparable gain, “comfortably ahead of consensus.”
L’Oréal’s Active Cosmetics Division’s sales were buoyed by all of its major brands, such as La Roche-Posay and SkinCeuticals.

Uber defends its business model over UK worker rights

Shikhar Dhawan set to return to Delhi Daredevils after 11 years

Eleven years since he made his IPL debut with Delhi Daredevils, Shikhar Dhawan is set to play for his home team again in 2019. ESPNcricinfo understands that the batsman is likely to have been traded by Sunrisers Hyderabad in exchange for three players – Vijay Shankar, Abhishek Sharma and Shahbaz Nadeem.

Sunrisers had chosen not to retain Dhawan ahead of last year’s auction, where the franchise paid INR 5.2 crore (approx USD 820,000) to buy him back. Since then, there have been murmurs about him being unhappy about being price tag, which eventually led to Sunrisers releasing him through the trade. Since Daredevils had bought the trio of Shankar (INR 3.2 cr), Nadeem (INR 3.2 cr) and Abhishek (INR 55 lakhs) for a total of INR 6.95 crore, Sunrisers would need to pay the balance amount in cash.

Dhawan last played for Daredevils in the first season of the IPL in 2008. Then he moved to Mumbai for a couple of years and finally arrived in Hyderabad, initially playing for Deccan Chargers for a year before joining Sunrisers in 2013.

Dhawan has been the leading run-getter for Sunrisers with a tally of 2768 from 91 innings at an average of 35.03 and strike-rate of 125.13. In the 2018 IPL, he made 497 runs at 35.50. His smart strike-rate was 142.82, better than his normal strike-rate of 136.91.

Although regular captain David Warner was the force behind Sunrisers winning the IPL in 2016, Dhawan also played a key role at the top of the order. In fact, the Warner-Dhawan combine (2357) is the third-most prolific pairing behind Chris Gayle-Virat Kohli (2787) and AB de Villiers-Kohli (2525)

In case the deal does go through – both franchises have been tight-lipped, making no public comment – it remains to be seen whether Daredevils have gained much from it, having released three allrounders, all Indians, two of whom (Shankar and Nadeem) are frequent first-choice picks in the XI.

The Dhawan deal is the second big trade ahead of the next IPL auction, scheduled for December 16. Royal Challengers Bangalore earlier released South African wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock to Mumbai Indians in a money-only trade, which involves a franchise selling the player in exchange for money, as opposed to swapping him for another player.

The other trade in the first trading window was RCB releasing Mandeep Singh to Kings XI Punjab in exchange for Australian allrounder Marcus Stoinis.

Twitter’s doubling of character count from 140 to 280 had little impact on length of tweets – TechCrunch

Twitter’s decision to double its character count from 140 to 280 characters last year hasn’t dramatically changed the length of Twitter posts. According to new data released by the company this morning, Twitter is still a place for briefer thoughts, with only 1% of tweets hitting the 280-character limit, and only 12% of tweets longer than 140 characters.

Brevity, it seems, is baked into Twitter – even when given expanded space, people aren’t using it.

Only 5% of tweets are longer than 190 characters, indicating that Twitter users have been for so long trained to keep their tweets short, they haven’t adapted to take advantage of the extra room to write.

Meanwhile, most tweets continue to be very short, Twitter says.

The most common length of a tweet back when Twitter only allowed 140 characters was 34 characters. Now that the limit is 280 characters, the most common length of a tweet is 33 characters. Historically, only 9% of tweets hit Twitter’s 140-character limit, now it’s 1%.

That said, Twitter did see some impact from the doubling of character count in terms of how people write.

It found that abbreviations are used much less than before. Instead of writing in “text speak” like “u r,” “u8,” “b4” and others, people are now using proper words. For example, the use of abbreviations like “gr8” is down by 36%, use of “b4″ is down by 13%,” and “sry” has dropped 5%. Other words have increased as result, including “great” (+32%), “before” (+70%) and “sorry” (+31%).

Twitter also points out that the use of “please” and “thank you” have increased over the year since the character count change, by 54% and 22%, respectively. But don’t take those metrics to mean that Twitter’s community itself has a kinder, gentler tone. Sentiment expressed on the network can’t be tracked by use of polite words alone – especially when they’re a part of less than polite conversations, or used sarcastically, for example. You’d need real sentiment analysis for that.

Perhaps unrelated to character count increases, Twitter found that the number of tweets with a question mark have increased by 30%, and overall, tweets are receiving more replies.

To be clear, the data is for English use of Twitter, but the company says the findings are consistent across the seven languages analyzed.

One thing Twitter didn’t measure was the use of threading, which seems to be the more popular way today of expressing longer thoughts. Threads, which are connected series of tweets telling a longer story, seem to be more popular than ever before. They also appear to take advantage of the extra characters, in many cases. These longform tweets often even announce themselves, by tweeting “THREAD” at their start.

But Twitter didn’t analyze the use of threads, or character counts within them, so it’s unclear to what extent they’ve changed following the increase to 280. (We’ve asked if they have access to this data, and will update if they can provide it.)

As a proxy, however, tools that help Twitter users read threads have seen a boost in usage in recent months. For example, Thread Reader App in August tweeted a chart showing its website’s global ranking climbing.

Civil servant who watched porn at work blamed for infecting a US government network with malware – TechCrunch

A U.S. government network was infected with malware thanks to one employee’s “extensive history” of watching porn on his work computer, investigators have found.

The audit, carried out by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s inspector general, found that a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) network at the EROS Center, a satellite imaging facility in South Dakota, was infected after an unnamed employee visited thousands of porn pages that contained malware, which downloaded to his laptop and “exploited the USGS’ network.” Investigators found that many of the porn images were “subsequently saved to an unauthorized USB device and personal Android cell phone,” which was connected to the employee’s government-issued computer.

Investigators found that his Android cell phone “was also infected with malware.”

The findings were made public in a report earlier this month but buried on the U.S. government’s oversight website and went largely unreported.

It’s bad enough in this day and age that a government watchdog has to remind civil servants to not watch porn at work — let alone on their work laptop. The inspector general didn’t say what the employee’s fate was, but ripped into the Department of the Interior’s policies for letting him get that far in the first place.

“We identified two vulnerabilities in the USGS’ IT security posture: web-site access and open USB ports,” the report said.

There is a (slightly) bright side. The EROS Center, which monitors and archives images of the planet’s land surface, doesn’t operate any classified networks, a spokesperson for Interior’s inspector general told TechCrunch in an email, ruling out any significant harm to national security. But the spokesperson wouldn’t say what kind of malware used — only that, “the malware helps enable data exfiltration and is also associated with ransomware attacks.”

Investigators recommended that USGS enforce a “strong blacklist policy” of known unauthorized websites and “regularly monitor employee web usage history.”

The report also said the agency should lock down its USB drive policy, restricting employees from using removable media on government devices, but it’s not known if the recommendations have yet gone into place. USGS did not return a request for comment.

Eaze co-founder Keith McCarty raises $5M for his new B2B cannabis startup – TechCrunch

Keith McCarty couldn’t stay out of the booming weed business for long.

The co-founder and former chief executive officer of the well-funded marijuana delivery startup Eaze has launched WAYV, a B2B cannabis logistics and compliance platform that delivers inventory to cannabis retailers. Today, the company is announcing its first round of funding, a $5 million seed round led by David Sacks at Craft Ventures. The round represents the former PayPal executive’s first investment in the cannabis technology sector.

Other investors in the round declined to be named.

McCarty and Sacks previously worked together at Yammer, a private social networking tool used by businesses created by Sacks in 2008. The company sold to Microsoft in 2012 for $1.2 billion, giving McCarty and several others enough cash to experiment. For McCarty, that meant exploring the hazy and uncharted territory that was marijuana delivery.

McCarty, however, mysteriously left Eaze right as the company gained significant traction. Neither the company nor McCarty ever explained the shake-up; McCarty was quickly replaced by another former Yammer employee, Jim Patterson, the founder and former CEO of Zinc. In a conversation with TechCrunch, McCarty didn’t clarify the nature of his exit.

He did say that the idea for WAYV came from observing the difficulties of cannabis supply chain logistics during his time at Eaze.

Headquartered in Los Angeles, WAYV connects licensed cannabis companies to licensed brands and provides next-day delivery of cannabis products — it’s essentially Eaze for the cannabis enterprise not the average cannabis consumer. The startup was founded last year and has so far delivered to retailers in California only.

As a second-time cannabis founder, McCarty said building WAYV has been a lot different than launching Eaze, which was one of the first big-name marijuana tech companies.

“Back in 2014, [Eaze was] one of the first to raise venture capital, it was kind of unheard of,” McCarty told TechCrunch. “Now, the majority of Americans favor legalization. For medical, it’s 90 percent and for adult recreational, it’s more than 60 percent. As we Americans continue to favor legalization and that stigma is removed, not just medical but also adult use, it’s going to draw attention and also investment.”

Venture capital investment in cannabis startups has continued to climb, most notably after the state of California voted to legalize recreational marijuana use in 2016. According to Crunchbase, $700 million has been funneled into the space since 2014.

“The industry is moving at such a fast cadence, it’s really exciting to be a part of,” McCarty added.
