Fernando Tatis Jr. homered, Luis Urias doubled, and Carlos Asuaje added in a RBI single as the Padres fell to the Mariners 3-2 in the first spring training game of 2018.
The Mariners did most of their damage in the first inning against Padres starter Brett Kennedy. Seattle led off the game with three straight hits to take a 2-0 lead. Dee Gordon started it off with a double and advanced to third on a Jean Segura single. A throwing error by Kennedy then brought home the first run, with Kyle Seager promptly doubling to bring home the second run shortly thereafter.
The Padres got a run back in the bottom half of the first on Carlos Asuaje’s aforementioned RBI single.
The highlight of the game came from Padres top prospect Fernando Tatis Jr. In the 8th inning, the 19-year-old quickly went down 0-2 in the count. After fouling off a pitch and taking one out of the zone, Tatis Jr. hit an opposite field home run off the back wall in the right field bullpen.
Tatis Jr. was not the only Padres prospect with an extra base hit. One inning earlier, top 2B prospect Luis Urias doubled off the wall in right center field.
The Padres are back in action tomorrow at 12:05 p.m. PT against the Oakland Athletics. The game will not be televised. The next televised game will be a FSW simulcast on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. PT. The game will be shown on Fox Sports San Diego.
