Brother of seven-year-old Joel Urhie killed in ‘arson attack’ sent back to prison

The brother of seven-year-old Joel Urhie, who was killed in a suspected arson attack, has been sent back to prison after recently being released following his drug dealing conviction in 2016.

Sam Urhie, 21, was arrested on Friday “on an urgent recall to prison” but is not being held as a suspect in relation to Tuesday’s fire at the family home in Deptford, southeast London.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “A 21-year-old man was arrested by police in Lewisham on Friday, 10 August on behalf of the Probation Service following an urgent recall to prison.

“He was not arrested as a suspect in the ongoing murder investigation following the fatal fire in Deptford.”

A 21-year-old man and a 29-year-old man were held in connection with the fire on Saturday. They were arrested on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and arson with intent to endanger life.

They were released under investigation pending further inquiries.

According to news agency sources, a line of inquiry is that the suspected arson attack was gang-related following reports Sam Urhie may have been the target.

Court records show the older brother was sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court in February 2016 and was given a jail sentence of four years and four months after he pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine and heroin with intent to supply, and having criminal cash.

Officers have said they are keeping an “open mind” with regards to motive behind the suspected arson attack.

Joel’s mother Sophie and 19-year-old sister Sarah escaped the blaze after they jumped out of a first floor window.
