6:29pm Stumps, Day 1 India would’ve liked Pandya to see the last ball off, but it has still been a very good day for them. From the depths they hit at Lord’s, a 3.52 scoring rate with four wickets in hand is mighty. They would have wanted to bat first and they got that when Root elected to bowl. It has seemed a good batting track all day, but India had still managed to fall for 82 for 3. But if the batting in the second Test was nervous, today’s approach was far removed from that. From it came the blunting of the new ball, and then a relaxed fifty from Rahane that drove India forward through the middle of the day. Kohli ticked along too before taking over at the end of the day. Woakes had a stunning first session, getting all three, but it was a batsmen dominated day after. There’s still enough shakiness – losing wickets at the stroke of session intervals, for example – to suggest India are not fully healed. But it’s only been a day. Rishab Pant came in and started with a six, minutes after Kohli fell short of a hundred. Will he be able to show some leadership tomorrow in the company of the lower order?
