A singer from doo-wop band The Overtones died after falling from a 13th floor balcony while on crystal meth, a coroner has ruled.
An inquest into the death of Timmy Matley heard that he arrived at a friend’s flat in east London while intoxicated, and became locked on the balcony.
In attempting to climb down, he fell to his death.
Mr Matley, 36, had been diagnosed with stage three malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer, in 2016.
In a statement the band – a group of painters and decorators who found fame in 2010 after they were discovered during a tea break near London’s Oxford Street – spoke of their deep loss.
“We will not be making any comment other than to say that Timmy, our funny, talented, beautiful friend, bandmate and brother, was dearly loved and he is deeply missed.”
The group had cancelled a summer tour following his death in April, but began playing shows again later in the year.
“We just want to make sure everything we do next is a celebration of love, friendship and good times that will both comfort and uplift you, not only as a tribute to our dear friend Timmy, but also as a tribute to the amazing eight years we spent together as a band and the memories we have made and shared with you all,” they wrote on Facebook.
The band – Lachie Chapman, Mike Crawshaw, Mark Franks and Darren Everest – are set to release a self-titled album this year featuring vocals from the late singer, as well as dedicating their live performances to his memory.
The record could join the band’s four albums to have charted in the UK top 10, including their debut, Good Ol’ Fashioned Love, which peaked at number four in 2010.
Mr Matley, who was born in Cork, was set to raise money for a cancer charity with a skydive in May, and almost £9,000 had been donated when he died.
